Install Google Analytics 4 on a Business Website

A practical GA4 setup for a client site: one property, the right stream, a tag that does not block the page, and the few events worth keeping.

Google Analytics 4 answers a different question from Search Console. Search Console shows how Google finds the site. Analytics shows what people do after they arrive: which page they open, whether they reach contact, and whether a campaign sent anyone at all.

Most brochure sites only need a small setup.

One property, one web stream

Create the property in the client’s Google account, not in a personal account you might lose access to. Add a web data stream for the production domain only.

Staging should not send hits into the same property. If you must measure staging, use a separate stream and delete it before launch. Mixed data makes the first month useless.

How the tag gets on the page

Three options, in the order I prefer for a simple site:

  1. The official snippet in the document head, loaded after the page can paint.
  2. Google Tag Manager, if the client already has other tags and someone will maintain the container.
  3. A well-known WordPress plugin that prints the measurement ID and nothing else.

Avoid installing GA4 twice. A theme option plus a plugin plus Tag Manager triple-counts page views and makes every report look better than reality.

The measurement ID looks like G-XXXXXXXX. Confirm it in the stream settings before you paste it.

What I mark as a conversion

For a service business, two events are usually enough:

  • a successful contact form submit;
  • a click on the WhatsApp or phone button.

Name them plainly (form_submit, whatsapp_click). Do not create ten goals on day one. You will not review them.

Test in DebugView with one real submission from your phone. If DebugView is empty, the tag is blocked, duplicated, or pointing at the wrong ID.

What to leave alone at first

  • Demographic reports that need extra consent settings you have not discussed with the client.
  • Scroll-depth and outbound-click noise, unless a specific page needs it.
  • Linking Ads if there is no campaign yet. You can connect it when spend starts.

A handover note

Tell the client which Google account owns the property, where the ID lives in the site, and which two events count as a lead. Without that, the next developer will add a second tag “just to be sure.”
