Shared Hosting or a VPS for a Business Website
How I choose between shared hosting and a VPS for client sites: traffic, WordPress weight, email, backups, and who will actually maintain the server.
On this page
“Pindah ke VPS biar cepat” is not always the right next step. A VPS is a machine you administer. Shared hosting is a crowded machine someone else administers. The better choice depends on the site and on who will look after it next year.
Shared hosting is enough when
- the site is a brochure or a small blog;
- traffic is modest and spiky only around a launch post;
- the host includes SSL, backups, and a control panel the client can open;
- page cache is available (LiteSpeed or an equivalent) and PHP is current.
A well-cached WordPress site on decent shared hosting in or near Indonesia often beats an idle VPS in another continent that nobody patches.
A VPS is worth it when
- TTFB stays high after caching, and the host’s neighbors are the cause;
- you need a specific PHP version, queue worker, or Redis the shared plan will not allow;
- several sites should be isolated from each other;
- someone on the project can apply updates, firewall rules, and restores.
If nobody owns the server, a VPS becomes a slower shared box with extra ways to break SSH.
What I compare before recommending a move
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Where are the visitors? | A Singapore or Jakarta region beats a cheap US box for Indonesian users |
| Is HTML cached? | Uncached PHP feels slow on any plan |
| Who restores a backup? | A panel backup the client can click is safer than a script only you understand |
| Is email on the same server? | Moving the web host must not silently drop MX records |
Price is the last column. A cheap VPS that needs a separate backup service, a panel license, and your hours is not cheaper than managed hosting.
A practical split I use
Keep marketing sites on managed or solid shared hosting with cache and a CDN in front. Put the application that has logins, background jobs, or a custom API on a VPS or a managed cloud instance, with monitoring and an off-site backup.
Write the recommendation in one paragraph for the client: current limit, what the new plan fixes, and what it does not fix. Moving hosts does not compress a 4 MB hero image.
