Which WordPress Plugins to Remove When the Site Feels Slow

A practical way to find plugins that slow WordPress: overlapping SEO, sliders, chat widgets, and backup jobs that run on every page view.

“WordPress is slow” is often “this site loads twelve plugins that all touch the homepage.” Deleting at random is risky. Measuring, then removing overlap, is not.

Find what actually runs

  1. Note TTFB and total transfer on the homepage (mobile throttling in DevTools is enough for a first pass).
  2. Disable plugins in a staging copy, in groups: builders, sliders, chat, “optimization,” security, backup.
  3. Turn them back on one at a time until the slowdown returns.
  4. On production, prefer Query Monitor or the host’s slow log over guessing.

If TTFB stays high with almost every plugin off, the host or missing page cache is the problem—not the icon font.

Plugins I question on brochure sites

  • Two SEO plugins writing titles, sitemaps, and schema at once.
  • Sliders and popup builders that pull several images and their own JS on every template.
  • Live chat that blocks the main thread before the user scrolls.
  • Backup plugins that archive on web requests instead of cron/off-peak.
  • Related-posts and share bars that query the database for every view.
  • “Speed” plugins stacked on LiteSpeed or a host cache—three minifiers fighting each other.

Keep one job per tool: one SEO plugin, one cache layer, one forms plugin, one image optimizer.

What not to delete first

  • the security plugin that is your only login limit, until you replace that control;
  • WooCommerce on a shop that still sells;
  • a form plugin until the replacement form is tested to a real inbox.

Deactivate, test the contact path, then delete. Deleting first loses settings you may need for a day.

A sane end state

Homepage HTML cached for anonymous visitors, images in a modern format, and a plugin list you can explain to the client in one screen. If you cannot name why a plugin is active, it is a candidate.
